Office Designer SEO Case Study

B2B Ecommerce for Office Design, Where the Buyer Is Rarely the User

Commercial office design, UK

Engagement 2019 to 2023

Office Designer fits out British workplaces: it plans layouts, builds made-to-measure furniture and joinery, and designs offices around posture, daylight and planting. It is the sister brand of House Designer. Between 2019 and 2023 it also sold desks, seating and fixed-scope design packages through a WooCommerce shop.

Office Designer has since stopped selling online and takes clients through consultation, so the shop described below is gone; the engagement’s reporting stayed with the company. This page covers what the shop was built to do. Our founder records the same project on nizamuddeen.com.

What It Shows

What This Case Shows

Companies buy furniture in a way no household does, and a design service is harder still to sell through a checkout. This case deals with both.

  1. Whoever searches seldom sits in the chair. Approval goes through a committee and takes weeks.
  2. Commercial buyers search in specification language, not shopping language, so product pages have to speak it.
  3. An intangible package has to feel concrete. A productised service page does the job a product photo does for a chair.
  4. A store and a consultancy on one site compete unless each has its own route in from search.
  5. Method, not metrics. The reporting belonged to the company and the shop is retired.

The Business and Its Buyers

Office Designer plans and designs commercial workplaces. Its buyers are companies, and the person who searches is often not the person who signs.

  • Layout planning for company offices
  • Made-to-measure desks, storage and joinery
  • Workplaces designed around comfort, light and planting
  • An online shop for furniture and fixed-scope design work
  • A sister brand, House Designer, doing the same for homes

A company furnishing an office takes weeks to decide and asks several people. The site had to work for that pace.

Two Problems at Once

Business-to-business ecommerce and productised services are each hard. This store had both.

  • Whoever places the order seldom uses the furniture, and several colleagues sign off
  • Weeks of comparison, never a quick purchase
  • Search happens in specification language: dimensions, materials, standards
  • A design package cannot be seen before it is bought
  • The store and the consultancy were competing for the same searches

Each problem needed its own answer, and the answers had to fit on one site without getting in each other’s way.

Card: the buyer is rarely the user
Card: productised design packages treated as products

Design Packages Sold Like Furniture

Each design package got a page as thorough as any chair’s. An empty page cannot persuade a buyer or satisfy a search engine, so the fix served both.

  • What is included in each package, stated plainly
  • What happens after purchase, step by step
  • What the deliverable actually is
  • Who each package suits, and who it does not
  • Enough detail to make an intangible thing concrete enough to pay for

When a buyer can see what they get, the page can be found for what it offers.

Store and Catalogue Work

The furniture catalogue was built for the way commercial buyers look.

  • Furniture pages written in dimensions, materials and standards, the way buyers specify
  • Shop sections and consultancy pages kept apart so neither undercut the other
  • Articles that support a slow committee decision
  • Crawl and template fixes throughout the shop
  • Reassurance aimed at someone spending their employer’s money

Separating the store from the consultancy was the structural decision that let each rank for its own searches.

Card: store and consultancy given separate routes in from search
Card: trust for a buyer spending a company budget

Trust for a Company Budget

A company buyer has to justify the purchase to someone else. The site had to give them what they needed to do that.

  • Clear specifications a buyer can forward to a colleague
  • Service scope written out so it can be approved
  • Proof of the design work, shown rather than claimed
  • Content that answers the questions raised in a buying meeting
  • Routes for an enquiry as well as a purchase, because some buyers need to talk first

In business buying, the page that wins is the one that makes the buyer look sensible to their manager.

How the Two Routes Worked

By the close, search sent furniture buyers to the shop and fit-out enquiries to the consultancy, with the two no longer fighting over the same queries.

  • Design packages presented as products, with substance to rank on
  • A furniture catalogue built for specification-led search
  • Store and consultancy separated so each could rank
  • The shop has since been retired in favour of consultation-led sales
  • Reporting stayed with the company, so none appears here

Questions about this case study.

The company’s reporting accounts were its own and closed to us in 2023, and it has since retired the shop to sell through consultations. We only print figures we can show on screen, so the page explains the build rather than the results.

A service sold like a product, with a fixed scope and a price, such as a design package. The page has to describe it as fully as a product page describes a chair: what is included, what happens after purchase, what the deliverable is and who it suits.

Because the buyer is rarely the user, the decision involves several people, the consideration window is long, and search happens in specification language. Pages written for impulse shoppers do not work for a company spending its budget.

One company owns both names and we worked on them side by side. The home brand sold through inspiration; this one sold through specifications.

Yes. Office furniture makers, industrial suppliers and service firms in Lahore, Karachi and Faisalabad sell to companies the same way: long decisions, several people, specification language. Separating the store from the enquiry route applies directly.

Our founder lists it at nizamuddeen.com beside House Designer. The version here is ORM’s.
